Final compositing project - Meteor Impact
Here is the final compositing project with all three shots edited together. A variety of tools and techniques have been used to create this short video, each of them discussed on our blogs.
Meteor Fume Test Render
A large amount of time has been spent setting up the various parameters within FumeFX. After the simulation had been calculated a quick test render was created. The overall effect is really nice, but the flames are far too slow for a meteor travelling at a vast speed.

Compositing Project 4 - Star Trek Challenge
Here is the final video for the Star Trek Challenge. I have been incredibly busy in London all week and was unfortunately limited to this weekend to work on the challenge. I am however pleased with the final result and had to think of some innovative ways of reducing render time as much as possible!
The video has 3 scenes, each of them with added CG...
Compositing Project 3 - Rotoscoping With Green Background
Above is a video of the roto challenge with a green background to show the effectiveness roto mask created.
Unfortunately Vimeo seems to have really compressed this video and made it very blocky.
Compositing Project 3 - Rotoscoping
This project was split into several compositions in order to achieve a good end result.
Firstly the footage was stabilised using the After Effects Motion Stabilise tool.
A total of 9 masks were created and animated frame by frame. A very long, boring and tedious process but it was the best way to produce a good alpha. Each mask has fine tuned feathering...

Compositing Project 2 - Colour Correction
Here is the colour corrected footage for project 2. The last scene was very difficult to correct and in the end I comprimised between carpet and skin colour. If the skin colour was corrected the carpet looked grey, and if the carpet was corrected the skin looked too green. I decided to correct both as well a possible, but neither look as good as they...
Compositing Project 2 - Colour Grading - Evening
The evening shot composed of several ramps and colour adjustment layers. The sky was seperately graded in order to obtain an orange horizon.
Compositing Project 2 - Colour Grading - Afternoon
The afternoon clip was graded using the same tools in After Effects. This was much easier to accomplish. If I were to take it further I would completely remove the sky and replace it. Unfortunately it was very hard to create a ‘sunny day’ look due to a lack of shadows.
Compositing Project 2 - Colour Grading - Morning
In order to colour grade this video I set up After Effects using Rec 709 Colour Space with 16bit channel depth in order to minimise any banding that may occur.
Due to the footage being low quality with low dynamic range I avoided using destructive colour correction techniques such as levels adjustment. Instead I used a combination of ramps,...
Compositing Project 1 - Keying Clip 2 with Added Motion Blur The footage contains some horrible ghosting, causing a choppy look resulting in some difficult keying! To try and mask the problem I have added some motion blur to the dancing girl, which blurs the ghosting frames into each other. This was achieved using the plugin ‘ReelSmart Motion Blur’. Unfortunately I don’t have a spare £150 so I’ve...
Compositing Project 1 - Keying Clip 2 Here is the final video for the second clip. As with clip 1 the footage proved very difficult to correctly key, but I’m happy with the end result.
I’ve tried uploading the video to tumbler about 5 times now, and each time it failed. Instead I’ve uploaded to vimeo and embedded it into tumblr. Annoying!
Compositing Project 1 - Keying Clip 1 - Take 2
Above is my second attempt at keying Clip 1. The black halo around the dancer has been removed and the Keying method is much more involved. It’s still not perfect, but then again the footage given was meant to test us!
Compositing Project 1 - Keying Clip 1
Here is the final video for the first keying clip. The keying was carefully set up to remove all green areas, but to keep some shadows. Because all the green had been removed from the shadows it worked similarly to a ‘shadow matte’ render pass. By keeping the shadows the girl fits into the shot far more successfully.
There are a few problems...
